New Program Fights Illegal Dumping in Wayne County
TUESDAY, AUGUST 9, 2005
DETROIT, MI - Wayne County's Department of Environment has kicked
off a new program aimed at helping communities fight illegal
dumping. It is called the C.L.E.A.N. program, which stands for
County Lending Environment Assistance to Neighborhoods, and it is
aimed at cleaning up illegal dumping sites in cities all across
Wayne County.
Wayne County Executive Robert Ficano explained how the program
works: "You fill out an application. If its accepted, then Wayne
County cleans it up, and then you enter into an agreement, whether
you're a community group or a city, that you're going to maintain
vigilance to keep it clear of dumping."
The cleanups are paid for with money diverted from tipping fees from
Wayne County landfills. So far, five sites in Highland Park have
been cleaned.
